Together supporting microfinance
and microinsurance in the South

Hofokam

Region: Africa
Country: Uganda
Partner: Trias
Type: Microfinance
Duration: 3 years
Budget: 82,000 euros

Just like everywhere else in the world, microfinancing is available most easily in the cities of Uganda. A microfinancing institution has a harder time turning itself into a successful enterprise in rural areas. The lower population density results in higher costs to reach clients. There are also more risks linked to credits for agricultural production.

Three dioceses in western Uganda have bundled their forces, which has resulted in the creation of Hofokam. Hofokam, with its 15,000 clients, is one of the largest microcredit institutions in rural Uganda.

The programme of the Belgian NGO Trias has selected Hofokam as the credit institution for the farmers’ groups that Trias supports. BRS advises Hofokam in its further development. For example, BRS provides advice on the conversion from a credit institution to a savings and credit institution, the computerisation and the risk management.
