The first contacts of the BRS with Duterimbere took place in 2003, when the BRS participated in the elaboration of the strategic plan of the NGO Duterimbere. During this period, NGO financial services were split and transferred to the MFI Duterimbere in order to comply with the requirements of the new microfinance legislation. BRS provided advice during the creation of the MFI. The official establishment took place on 6 March 2004.

In a second phase, BRS worked with Terrafina. During the period 2007-2009, investments were made in the further professionalization of Duterimbere-IMF, Ltd. in the areas of automation, training and product range expansion.

Under the impetus of Rwanda's agricultural policy, microfinance institutions are focusing more on "agricultural credits". It was found that most organizations lacked the practical knowledge to assess and manage the risks of these specific credits.

In a training course on agricultural financing, the BRS shared the agricultural credit methodology based on the use of agricultural credit sheets.

Recently, BRS and Duterimbere have worked closely together on product development and marketing.

As of December 31, 2017, Duterimbere employed 122 people in 18 branches for approximately 10,265 credit customers and 67,000 active customers.
